Composer, producer and instrumentalist: Peeter Vähi
Bassoon: Martin Kuuskmann
Vocals: Druwang Rinpoche and the monsk of the Drikung Kagyu school
The charismatic personality on the cover of the CD Booklet is the venerable
Druwang Rinpoche, who Peeter Vähi met at the upper Indus. This exceptional
Yogi with his penetrating gaze conveys a "pure clarity". Born in Tibet
in 1921, he entered the Drikung Thil Monastery as a child, studied philosophy
of mahayana at the Buddhist academy and withdrew himself twice for twelve years
into the solitude of a cave.
The Estonian composer Peeter Vähi is a practising Buddhist. He recorded
this album in Tallinn together with monsk from the Drikung Kagyu school. He
uses their Buddhist mantras and ritual songs as a basis and combines these with
his musical beliefs of the western cultures. Thereby he is supported by the
Estonian bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann - who lives in New York - with his distinctive
tone and virtuoso improvisations (also see "Archipelago" on CCn'C
Records).
Peeter Vähi's dialogue with the Western and Asiatic cultures is, amongst
others found in his works "The Path To The Heart Of Asia" (Erdenklang 20502),
"Supreme Silence" (CCn'C 00182) as well as "Chant Of The Celestial Lake" ("Celestials"
CCn'C 01712).
Vähi's music is always a subjective expression of his spirituality rooted in
deep faith, which he contrasts with a hyper modern complex world and its actually
intellectual and perfect, but often just as inexplicable and soulless contemporary
music. The same as in all his work, also this CD reflects his empathy converted
into mystical connections between the cultures of different countries and epochs
in exotic music
